Macy’s Awards Muindi Foundation with $5,000 Grant

(San Jose, CA) January 27, 2025

In support of its Mission Every One program, Macy’s recently granted San Jose-based Muindi Foundation with $5,000. The Mission Every One program aims to support underrepresented youth to create a brighter future with bold representation. In 2022, Macy’s awarded more than $11M to 300+ communities across the U.S.

The grant to the Muindi Foundation represents the maximum amount awarded to an organization of its size. The grant supports the Foundation’s LearnNow initiative, a free program for qualified low-income, at-risk and underserved students. The Macy’s grant will directly support the organization’s mission to empower marginalized children through educational success. The funding will be used to enhance Muindi Foundation’s after-school tutoring and mentorship initiatives, ensuring students receive personalized academic help, and fund community drives like the back-to-school program and Christmas Adopt-a-Child initiative. It also allows the foundation to expand programming to accommodate more students and families, and cover costs for school supplies, backpacks, and learning materials for students.

“A 2021 national study showed that students who don’t read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to leave high school without a diploma, and children who aren’t proficient readers when they start fourth grade won’t be able to understand half of the curriculum,” notes Muindi Foundation Co-Founder and Treasurer Serena Muindi. “The Macy’s grant, along with other recent contributions of similar amounts, marks a significant turning point for the Muindi Foundation, as it’s the first time we’ve received support of this magnitude to expand our LearnNow programs, bridging the gap for these vulnerable students,” she adds.
